InstantBDExpress case study: Forward

Forward was the very first application to use the InstantBDExpress technology. Later, due to the successful conversion project, the customer has applied the same strategy to a different application called RegantLite.

In brief

Application name Forward, Forward International, RegantLite
Customer Liscor S.p.A.
Scope Finance.
Description

Liscor produces applications for national and international financial institutions, operating in the market of financial products.

Forward Enterprise is their flagship product, originally developed in no less than Delphi 2! Ethea has contributed through its products and services to get past some technical challenges such as migrating from the BDE to DBExpress and internationalizing the application.

With RegantLite Liscor has had the chance to leverage DBExpress' flexibility: by means of Firebird 2 Embedded and the UIB 2 DBExpress driver it has been possbile to create a package that's simple and easy to install and totally self-contained, built off the same source code that makes up the corresponding module in the bigger Forward application.

A multi-language (french, russian, english) version of Forward, called Forward International, was then developed by integrating InstantSolutions' Internationalization module by Ethea.

Databases Microsoft SQL Server (both 2000 and2005), Oracle, IBM DB2, Firebird.
Lingue

Italian, French, Russian, English.

Strong points

The features of InstantBDExpress that enabled project success in this case were:

  • Ability to do porting to DBExpress and development with the BDE in parallel. This allowed the application to grow and interface with other databases such as IBM DB2, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 .
  • Support and consultancy from Ethea were key factors in these projects, providing technology upgrades and architecture and design tips.
  • DBExpress' flexibility in supporting different databases, combined with InstantBDExpress' data type mapping features allowed to create RegantLite with Firebird Embedded, a database that was not supported by the application until then.
